Rafting in San Gil: Fonce, Suárez or Chicamocha River?

San Gil is one of the best places in Colombia for rafting, but not all rivers are the same. The question we hear most at reception is which one to pick. It depends on three things: how much experience you have, how much adrenaline you want and how much time you have.
Fonce River: your first rafting trip
Rafting – Fonce River (beginners) is the option for beginners and families. It's about 11 kilometers with class I to III rapids and calm stretches, in around two hours. Before setting off, the guides explain how to paddle and the safety signals. Children from age 5 can go with parental permission, and there are departures from 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., so it's easy to fit into any day.
If there are two of you, Doky – Fonce River (2-person raft) is a fun alternative: an inflatable raft for two where you are the whole crew.
Suárez River: for true adventurers
Rafting – Suárez River (class IV-V) is something else. Class IV and V rapids, waves crashing over the raft and a river that demands teamwork and courage. You need to be in good physical shape and knowing how to swim is recommended. It takes about five hours in total, about two on the water, departing at 10:00 a.m.
Chicamocha River: a full-day expedition
Rafting – Chicamocha River (full day) runs through the Chicamocha Canyon for about six hours, with class III to IV+ rapids and calm stretches to take in the rock walls. It includes private transport, a typical lunch, a beer to celebrate and photos. It runs with a minimum of 4 people, with or without experience.
